FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

IT IS STATED THAT BHEF IS AN INDEPENDENT FOUNDATION. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

It means that it functions under the direction of the BHEF Board with no other outside direction.  Being independent means that it is not subject to the budgeting or administrative processes of any other body.  This presents opportunities for fund raising and granting that go beyond governmental sources.  However, it should be clearly stated that BHEF expects to work closely with the Benton Harbor Area Schools and support their mission.

DO OTHER SCHOOLS SYSTEMS HAVE FOUNDATIONS SUPPORTING THEM AND DO THEY OPERATE IN A SIMILAR WAY?

Yes.  St. Joseph, Lakeshore and many other communities have foundations set up with similar by-laws and structures.  Most school systems of substantial size have a foundation working with them.

WHERE WILL FUNDING COME FROM?

BHEF will explore all sources of funding including large and small businesses, alums, charitable organizations, the community and more.

CAN DONORS DESIGNATE HOW THEY WOULD LIKE THEIR DONATIONS SPENT?

Absolutely yes.  We welcome and encourage donors to direct their funds to any specific cause or mission that they would like.  We will also provide feedback to the donor and encourage them to become involved.

WILL BHEF PROVIDE INFORMATION ON HOW THE GRANTS TURNED OUT?

Yes.  We need to follow up on the execution of the grants and report the results.  This is important for the Grants Committee to know and also for our donors to see.
